Help For Homeless Veterans

Veterans are more likely to experience homelessness than the general population, with 12.3% of the homeless population being veterans compared to 9.7% of the general population. Some factors that contribute to homelessness in veterans include:

  • Lack of affordable housing
  • Poverty
  • Job or income loss
  • Mental illness
  • Substance abuse
  • Health problems
  • PTSD
  • Lack of family and social support networks
  • Military occupations and training that are not always transferable to the civilian workforce.

Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance.

Homes for All Veterans provides services to help veterans find temporary shelter and permanent housing, and obtain VA and other public benefits. The VA also offers the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans (DCHV) Program, which provides residential care for sheltered and unsheltered veterans with multiple challenges, illnesses, or rehabilitative care needs.

Homeless veterans may be eligible for a wide variety of benefits available to all U.S. military veterans, including:

  • Disability compensation
  • Pension
  • Education and training
  • Health care
  • Home loans
  • Insurance
  • Vocational rehabilitation and employment
